Tech Mahindra, Mastercard Target Embedded B2B Payments

Tech Mahindra and Mastercard are partnering to integrate virtual card payments and embedded finance capabilities into enterprise resource planning (ERP), procurement and procure-to-pay platforms. The initiative aims to help global businesses automate commercial payments, improve working capital visibility, strengthen fraud controls and simplify supplier onboarding without replacing their existing enterprise systems. By connecting payment functionality directly to finance and procurement workflows, the companies are targeting persistent inefficiencies in business-to-business (B2B) transactions, where fragmented systems and manual reconciliation can slow payment execution.

Embedding payments in existing enterprise workflows

The partnership focuses on a longstanding problem in corporate finance: payment execution often sits in a different system from the purchasing decisions, invoice approvals and supplier records that trigger it.

Tech Mahindra will contribute enterprise transformation and integration expertise, while Mastercard brings its embedded payment capabilities and virtual card network. The companies plan to connect these capabilities with leading ERP systems and procure-to-pay and source-to-pay platforms.

API-led integration is central to the approach. Rather than asking companies to replace established finance software, the partners intend to connect payment services to existing workflows. That could reduce the need for employees to switch between procurement applications, banking portals and reconciliation tools.

The proposed capabilities include payment automation, real-time reconciliation, fraud management and enhanced spending controls. These functions could help accounts payable teams match transactions with invoices, give treasury teams better visibility into payment activity, and allow procurement teams to manage supplier payments within existing processes.

The announcement does not name specific ERP vendors, implementation customers or a commercial launch date. It also provides no independently verified results demonstrating reductions in processing time, fraud or operating costs. Those details will be important in assessing the solution’s practical value.

Virtual cards and working capital management

Virtual cards can provide businesses with digitally generated payment credentials that are subject to defined spending limits or transaction controls. Depending on the implementation, companies can use them to manage supplier payments, track expenditure and simplify transaction matching.

Embedding virtual card capabilities into procurement software could bring payment decisions closer to the point where a purchase is approved. Businesses may gain more consistent oversight of spending while reducing manual steps between purchasing and settlement.

Working capital is another potential benefit. Payment timing, supplier terms and the reconciliation of outstanding obligations all influence how companies manage cash. Better-integrated payment workflows could help finance teams understand these obligations and coordinate payment execution more effectively.

The results will depend on individual commercial arrangements, including supplier acceptance, card economics, integration costs and the payment methods supported. Virtual cards are not automatically the best option for every supplier or transaction, particularly where bank transfers or local payment rails offer a more suitable alternative.

Agentic AI adds another dimension

Tech Mahindra also says the partnership will enable enterprises to leverage agentic AI workflows as they modernize their payment operations.

In a finance context, AI agents could potentially assist with tasks such as reviewing payment exceptions, checking transaction data, identifying discrepancies or preparing reconciliation workflows. More autonomous execution would require clearly defined permissions, audit trails and human oversight for sensitive decisions.

The announcement does not specify which agentic AI products will be used or whether agents will be permitted to initiate or approve payments independently. The reference should therefore be understood as a potential extension of the integration strategy, not confirmation of a fully autonomous payment system.

Security and compliance will be central to adoption. Enterprises need to ensure that payment credentials, approval hierarchies, transaction limits and fraud controls remain effective when payment functions are embedded in software or supported by AI-driven automation.

A broader shift in B2B payments

The partnership reflects a broader move toward making payments part of enterprise software rather than treating them as a separate financial operation. McKinsey’s 2026 Global Payments Report, published in September 2026, estimates that global payments generated approximately $2.6 trillion in revenue in 2025, illustrating the scale of the sector and the commercial importance of payment infrastructure. For Mastercard, embedding payments into procurement and ERP systems offers a way to extend its commercial payment capabilities into the software where businesses initiate and manage transactions. For Tech Mahindra, the engagement adds to its enterprise transformation work in banking and payments technology.

The two companies are not disclosing financial terms or customer commitments, so the immediate significance lies in the proposed integration model rather than a measurable market impact.

For finance leaders, the test will be whether the partnership can connect existing enterprise systems without introducing new complexity, while delivering reliable payment controls and meaningful improvements to reconciliation and supplier management. Its success will depend less on the promise of embedded finance than on how well the technology works across real-world corporate payment processes.

Market Landscape

Embedded B2B payments are becoming an important part of enterprise financial technology as businesses seek to connect procurement, accounts payable, treasury and payment execution.

McKinsey’s 2026 Global Payments Report estimates that global payments generated approximately $2.6 trillion in revenue in 2025. Its analysis also identifies software-driven services and AI-enabled operational improvements as important areas of industry change. McKinsey & Company

Three trends are particularly relevant:

  • Payments embedded in enterprise software: ERP and procurement integrations can reduce fragmentation between purchasing decisions and payment execution.
  • Virtual cards and spend controls: Digitally issued payment credentials can support transaction-level controls and improve expense tracking, subject to supplier acceptance and commercial terms.
  • AI-assisted financial operations: Agentic AI could help manage reconciliation exceptions and routine finance workflows, but payment authorization requires robust governance and auditability.

The Tech Mahindra–Mastercard partnership combines enterprise integration capabilities with payment network infrastructure. Its competitive significance will depend on implementation quality, supported platforms, supplier adoption and measurable operational improvements.
