Northern Trust Asset Management Appoints New Global Co-Chief Investment Officers

Northern Trust Asset Management (NTAM), a leading global investment management firm with $1.3 trillion in assets under management as of March 31, 2025, has announced the appointment of Michael Hunstad, PhD, and Christian (Chris) Roth, CFA, as Global Co-Chief Investment Officers, effective June 1, 2025.

1. Leadership Roles and Responsibilities
   • Hunstad and Roth will oversee NTAM’s investment performance, process, and philosophy.
   • They will co-chair the Investment Policy Committee and lead the global teams across equity, fixed income, multi-asset, and alternatives.
   • They will be members of the Asset Management Executive Group and report directly to NTAM President, Daniel Gamba.
2. NTAM’s Investment Philosophy
   • The new leaders will uphold NTAM’s core investment philosophy, which emphasizes that investors should be compensated for the risks they take in all market environments and investment strategies.
   • Their leadership will help further strengthen NTAM’s ability to serve clients’ investment needs across all asset classes.
3. Successor to Angelo Manioudakis
   • Hunstad and Roth will succeed Angelo Manioudakis, who will retire from NTAM effective May 31, 2025, after joining the firm in 2021 following a long tenure in the asset management industry.
4. Michael Hunstad, PhD
   • Hunstad has been with NTAM for more than 12 years, previously serving as deputy chief investment officer and chief investment officer of global equities.
   • He led all equity portfolio management, research, and trading activities, including quantitative, index, and tax-advantaged strategies.
   • He holds a Ph.D. in mathematics, an MBA in finance, a master’s degree in econometrics, and a bachelor’s degree in economics.
5. Christian Roth, CFA
   • Roth joined NTAM in April 2024 as chief investment officer of global fixed income, overseeing the firm’s global fixed income and liquidity business.
   • Previously, Roth spent three decades at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, holding leadership roles in fixed income, including head of broad markets fixed income and multi-sector fixed income.
   • He is a CFA® charterholder.
