BitPay Adds One-Tap Crypto Purchases Through MoonPay

  • News
  • November 6, 2026

BitPay has introduced a one-tap cryptocurrency buying experience in its mobile wallet, integrating MoonPay’s payment infrastructure to let eligible users purchase digital assets through Apple Pay, Google Pay, cards and SEPA transfers in supported European markets. Available on iOS and Android across more than 100 countries, the update is designed to reduce the steps between selecting a cryptocurrency and completing a purchase. Purchased assets are delivered directly to users’ self-custody BitPay wallets, where they retain control of their private keys.

Embedded checkout reduces steps in crypto purchases

The new checkout opens within the BitPay Wallet with the selected cryptocurrency, purchase amount and preferred payment method pre-filled according to the user’s preferences. For Apple Pay and Google Pay transactions, buyers can authenticate through the payment method already configured on their device rather than manually entering card details.

The sign-in process also changes for returning customers. Users who already have a MoonPay account are logged in automatically, while first-time buyers must complete a one-time registration and identity-verification process. Once that initial setup is complete, subsequent purchases can use the streamlined checkout.

The integration is powered by MoonPay’s Headless Onramps technology. Introduced in May 2026, the infrastructure allows partner applications to retain control of the customer-facing checkout while MoonPay provides the underlying payment processing, compliance and identity-verification capabilities.

For BitPay, the integration adds a more tightly embedded purchase route without requiring the company to replace its existing buying infrastructure.

Multi-provider rate comparison remains available

The new MoonPay checkout operates alongside BitPay’s existing multi-provider buying experience. That feature compares live offers from supported on-ramp providers and presents available rates based on the user’s country and payment method.

BitPay introduced an updated buy-and-sell experience in January 2026, emphasizing rate comparisons, payment flexibility and access to several third-party providers, including MoonPay, Banxa, Simplex, Sardine, Ramp and Transak.

The distinction between the two purchase paths is relevant. The new one-tap option prioritizes a streamlined checkout through MoonPay, while the multi-provider feature gives users a way to compare offers. The availability and cost of a purchase can still depend on the asset, location, payment method, provider fees and transaction limits.

BitPay has not disclosed a complete breakdown of supported cryptocurrencies, purchase limits or transaction fees specifically for the new checkout. Users should review the quoted exchange rate, fees and final amount before confirming a transaction.

Self-custody remains central to the wallet

After a purchase, the cryptocurrency is delivered directly to the user’s BitPay Wallet. The wallet is self-custodial: private keys are controlled by the user rather than held by BitPay. The company says wallet keys are stored locally on the user’s device, making backup and recovery-phrase security important responsibilities.

The wallet also combines cryptocurrency storage with buying, selling, swapping, peer-to-peer transfers and spending through supported merchants and gift cards. The new checkout therefore extends an existing wallet ecosystem rather than introducing a separate custodial account or exchange service.

Self-custody does not remove the risks associated with buying or holding digital assets. Users remain responsible for securing their recovery phrases, while cryptocurrency prices can fluctuate and transactions may involve network fees or other costs. Identity checks and payment-provider requirements also remain part of the purchase process.

Geographic availability and payment restrictions

BitPay says the feature is available on iOS and Android in more than 100 countries, including the United States and supported European Union markets. Payment methods vary by region: SEPA is intended for eligible EU users, while Apple Pay, Google Pay and card availability depends on the user’s market and payment-provider support.

The headline availability figure should not be interpreted as universal access. BitPay’s support documentation lists India among jurisdictions where certain BitPay products and services are restricted or unsupported. Users should therefore check the app’s regional eligibility before expecting to use the new buying flow.

The update reflects a broader effort among wallet providers to make cryptocurrency purchases feel more like familiar mobile-payment transactions. Rather than sending customers through separate provider websites and repeated forms, embedded on-ramps place payment and identity checks closer to the wallet experience.

For BitPay, the MoonPay integration is primarily a user-experience and payment-infrastructure update. Its impact will depend on how widely the checkout is available, whether users receive competitive rates and how reliably payment methods work across different markets.

Market Landscape

Crypto on-ramps connect traditional payment methods with blockchain-based assets. They allow users to pay in fiat currency through cards, bank transfers or mobile wallets and receive cryptocurrency in a digital wallet.

The market is moving toward embedded checkout models, with several important trends:

  • Fewer checkout steps: Wallets are integrating payment flows directly into their apps to reduce redirects and repeated data entry.
  • Mobile payment integration: Apple Pay and Google Pay provide familiar authentication and payment experiences, subject to regional and issuer support.
  • Third-party infrastructure: Providers such as MoonPay supply payment processing, compliance and identity verification to wallet and application partners.
  • Provider and rate comparisons: Multi-provider on-ramps give users alternatives based on payment method, location and quoted price.
  • Self-custody adoption: Wallets are combining direct purchasing with user-controlled storage, shifting responsibility for key management to customers.

BitPay’s update combines two approaches: a dedicated MoonPay-powered checkout for a faster purchase path and an existing provider-comparison experience for users who want to evaluate available offers.
