Yiwu’s Creator Economy Drives New Growth in Cross-Border E-Commerce

China’s manufacturing hub Yiwu is emerging as a global destination for content creators seeking to combine livestream shopping with cross-border commerce. Influencers from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East are increasingly traveling to the city’s wholesale markets to produce localized shopping content, reflecting a broader shift toward creator-led international retail powered by digital platforms, dropshipping, and AI-enabled commerce.

The convergence of the creator economy and cross-border e-commerce is reshaping how manufacturers reach international consumers, and Yiwu, China’s largest wholesale marketplace for small commodities, is becoming one of the sector’s fastest-growing hubs.

Known for its vast supplier ecosystem and export-oriented manufacturing base, Yiwu is attracting influencers, livestream hosts, and digital entrepreneurs who are transforming wholesale sourcing into consumer-facing content. The model enables creators to broadcast directly from factories and wholesale markets while merchants fulfill orders through integrated logistics and dropshipping networks.

The trend reflects the rapid evolution of social commerce, where content creators increasingly influence purchasing decisions across platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts. Rather than relying solely on traditional distributors or international trade exhibitions, manufacturers are partnering directly with creators to reach overseas audiences through livestream shopping and short-form video.

Recent activity in Yiwu illustrates the scale of this transformation. During July, international creators and influencers independently hosted livestream shopping sessions across the eight major districts of Yiwu International Trade City, producing multilingual content that reached more than 40 million followers worldwide. Bilingual videos created during these visits generated over 10 million views, while merchants reported a growing number of overseas sourcing inquiries.

The commercial impact extends beyond audience engagement.

Indonesian livestream creator Rami gained more than 80,000 new followers within just over ten days after broadcasting from the Yiwu Global Digital Trade Center. One jewelry merchant featured in the livestreams reported incremental revenue of RMB 20,000–30,000 per session. In another example, a Malaysian content creator generated more than RMB 200,000 in sales during a single livestream featuring a silver jewelry retailer, prompting the merchant to pursue a longer-term commercial partnership.

Domestic creators are also embracing the opportunity. Over the past two months, more than 300 Chinese influencers visited Yiwu’s wholesale markets, touring over 1,370 manufacturers and supplier booths. Together, they published 305 industry-focused videos that accumulated more than 128 million views and generated over 8,000 verified sourcing inquiries, demonstrating how creator-generated content is increasingly serving both consumer marketing and B2B procurement.

The products featured span more than 20 manufacturing sectors, including AI-powered consumer electronics, collectible toys, beauty products, outdoor equipment, imported home furnishings, fashion accessories, and lifestyle goods. This diversity reflects Yiwu’s position as one of the world’s largest wholesale marketplaces, offering access to more than 2.1 million product lines across 26 major product categories.

To support the growing creator ecosystem, Yiwu has expanded its digital commerce infrastructure beyond traditional wholesale operations.

The Global Digital Trade Center recently introduced its “Starlight Livestream” initiative, under which nearly 700 merchants extend operating hours into the early morning to align with peak online shopping periods across Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. The schedule enables overseas creators to livestream in real time while their audiences are most active, improving engagement and conversion opportunities.

Technology plays a central role in this model. Integrated dropshipping services eliminate the need for creators to maintain inventory or manage fulfillment operations. Instead, merchants ship products directly to customers while creators generate revenue through commission-based partnerships. The city has also introduced multilingual AI-powered editing tools, dedicated livestream studios, and integrated cross-border logistics services to simplify content production for international creators.

The strategy reflects broader changes in global retail, where creator-led commerce is becoming an increasingly important customer acquisition channel. According to Statista, worldwide social commerce sales are projected to continue expanding rapidly over the coming years as consumers increasingly purchase products directly through social media platforms. Meanwhile, McKinsey & Company has identified creator partnerships as a growing driver of digital commerce, particularly among younger consumers seeking authentic product recommendations.

Yiwu’s broader trade performance also underscores the momentum behind its digital transformation. During the first half of 2026, the city recorded RMB 420.7 billion in exports, representing 17.3% year-over-year growth. Cross-border e-commerce transaction value surpassed RMB 100 billion during the six-month period for the first time, increasing 11.25% compared with the previous year.

For merchants, creator partnerships offer an alternative route to international expansion without relying exclusively on overseas exhibitions or traditional import-export intermediaries. According to local survey data, more than 87% of participating merchants expressed interest in establishing long-term collaborations with overseas creators.

For content creators, the model significantly lowers barriers to entry into international commerce. Rather than investing in inventory, warehousing, or logistics, creators can focus on producing localized content while leveraging Yiwu’s manufacturing ecosystem, supplier network, and fulfillment infrastructure.

As livestream commerce continues to evolve from entertainment into a sophisticated retail channel, Yiwu is positioning itself not simply as a global sourcing destination but as an integrated digital commerce ecosystem where manufacturing, content creation, AI-powered production, and cross-border logistics converge to support the next generation of international retail.

Market Landscape

Creator-led commerce is becoming a major force in global retail, driven by the rapid adoption of TikTok Shop, Instagram Shopping, YouTube Shopping, and AI-powered content production. According to Statista, global social commerce continues to grow at double-digit rates as consumers increasingly purchase products directly through digital content. McKinsey & Company also identifies creator partnerships as a key strategy for brands seeking authentic customer engagement and international market expansion.

Yiwu’s integration of manufacturing, wholesale trade, AI-enabled content production, livestream infrastructure, and cross-border logistics reflects a broader evolution toward commerce ecosystems, where supply chains and digital platforms operate as unified marketplaces serving both merchants and creators.
