Temenos SaaS Selected by Vancity for Core Banking Modernization

Canadian credit union Vancity has selected Temenos SaaS to modernize its core banking technology, adopting a phased migration strategy designed to introduce new digital banking capabilities while protecting existing operations. The program will cover retail deposits, retail lending, corporate banking and payments, using Temenos Core, Temenos Payments Hub and Temenos Data Hub. Deployed on Microsoft Azure, the platform is intended to give Vancity a more scalable technology foundation as it serves more than 588,000 members across over three million accounts.

Vancity Plans a Phased Move to Cloud-Based Banking

Vancity, which reported CAD $42.4 billion in assets, is undertaking a core banking modernization program with Temenos as its technology provider. The selection reflects a wider technology challenge for established financial institutions: upgrading foundational banking systems while maintaining the reliability of services used by customers and business clients.

Rather than replacing its existing platform in a single transition, Vancity plans to use a build-and-migrate strategy. This approach will allow it to introduce capabilities on the new platform while progressively transitioning existing operations. The stated goal is to manage the migration at a pace that protects members, business continuity and operational stability.

Core banking systems support essential financial functions, including deposit accounts, lending, transaction processing and customer records. Modernizing these systems can help institutions introduce new services and simplify technology management, but the transition also requires careful coordination across products, data, processes and connected systems.

The announcement does not disclose a migration timetable, implementation budget or specific go-live dates. It also does not identify which member-facing features will launch first.

Three Temenos Components Cover Core Banking and Payments

The transformation program includes three elements: Temenos Core, Temenos Payments Hub and Temenos Data Hub.

Temenos Core will support the institution’s core banking operations, including retail deposits, retail lending and corporate banking. Temenos Payments Hub is included to support payment operations, while Temenos Data Hub forms part of the broader data technology scope.

Together, the components are intended to support Vancity’s main business lines through a modernized technology environment. However, the announcement does not provide detailed technical specifications, integration plans or a breakdown of individual product capabilities in the proposed deployment.

The platform will run on Microsoft Azure through Temenos SaaS. Under this model, Vancity aims to simplify the management of its core banking technology and establish a foundation that can scale as its requirements change.

For financial institutions, moving core banking workloads to a cloud-based service can shift some technology management responsibilities toward the platform provider. The practical benefits depend on implementation choices, service arrangements, system integration, security controls and how effectively the institution manages the transition. The announcement does not disclose the specific division of operational responsibilities between Vancity, Temenos and Microsoft.

Modernization Without a Disruptive Switch

Vancity’s build-and-migrate approach places continuity at the center of the project. Wendy Murphy, Vancity’s chief technology officer, described the selection as a move toward a simpler and more scalable technology foundation that can evolve as members’ needs change.

Murphy said the aim is to reduce the time spent managing technology complexity and redirect more effort toward improving banking experiences.

That objective is relevant to member-owned financial institutions, which must balance investment in technology with the delivery of reliable services across a broad membership. For Vancity, the scope spans both consumer-facing products and corporate banking, making the coordination of migration and ongoing operations an important part of the program.

Still, the selection alone does not establish how quickly Vancity will deliver new digital services or whether members will see immediate changes. Those outcomes will depend on implementation progress and the capabilities introduced as the migration advances.

Cloud Infrastructure and ESG Commitments

Temenos said the Azure-based SaaS deployment will provide a scalable and resilient foundation and support Vancity’s environmental, social and governance commitments through a more efficient technology environment.

The announcement does not quantify expected energy savings, emissions reductions or other ESG outcomes. Any environmental benefit will depend on the implementation and the underlying infrastructure and operating arrangements, so the commitment should not be read as a measured reduction in the institution’s footprint.

Brian DuVal, Temenos’ president for North America, said the program illustrates how established financial institutions can move core banking operations to the cloud while supporting complex business requirements.

The deal adds another modernization project to Temenos’ banking technology business, but the companies have not disclosed financial terms or a detailed delivery schedule.

What the Deal Means for Banking Technology

Vancity’s selection highlights the importance of gradual modernization for institutions that cannot easily pause or replace foundational systems. By combining core banking, payments and data components within a SaaS program, the credit union is seeking to build a platform that can evolve while its current operations continue.

The key test will be execution: migrating services safely, maintaining reliable payments and account operations, integrating the new environment and delivering measurable improvements for members. Until the institutions disclose milestones or outcomes, the benefits remain objectives rather than demonstrated results.

Market Landscape

Core banking modernization is a strategic technology decision for financial institutions seeking to improve agility without compromising service continuity. SaaS-based platforms offer an alternative to managing all core infrastructure internally, but adoption requires careful planning around migration, integration, governance and operational resilience. Vancity’s phased approach reflects the need to balance technology change with the everyday demands of retail and corporate banking.
