MKS Financial Services Inc. has been named the 2026 Consumer Choice Award winner in the Financial Planning category, recognizing the Regina-based firm’s 15 years of work with clients approaching retirement. The award highlights the growing importance of personalized financial advice as households navigate retirement income, wealth preservation and longer-term financial planning.

For financial planning firms, client trust can be harder to build than a portfolio model.

MKS Financial Services Inc. is marking 15 years in Regina and surrounding communities with a new form of recognition: the firm has been named the 2026 Consumer Choice Award winner in the Financial Planning category.

The award comes as MKS continues to focus on retirement planning and personalized financial strategies for pre-retirees and families. Rather than positioning financial planning as a standardized product, the firm says its approach centers on education, ongoing advice and plans tailored to individual circumstances.

That distinction is increasingly relevant as people approaching retirement face a more complicated financial landscape. Retirement decisions now often involve coordinating investment assets, government benefits, tax considerations, insurance, estate planning and the timing of income withdrawals.

For an advisory firm, the challenge is not simply producing a retirement projection. It is helping clients understand the trade-offs behind the numbers.

An education-first approach to financial planning

MKS Financial Services says it works closely with clients to explain financial strategies and answer questions before recommendations are implemented.

The model is designed to make clients active participants in the planning process rather than simply recipients of financial products.

Mike Spicer, president of MKS Financial Services, said the firm’s 15-year milestone is ultimately about the relationships developed with clients.

“We’re honoured to receive this Consumer Choice Award,” Spicer said, adding that helping clients approach retirement with confidence remains central to the firm’s work.

That relationship-oriented model is particularly relevant for retirement planning, where financial decisions can span decades.

A client approaching retirement may need to consider how much income can be generated from accumulated assets, how long those assets need to last and how market volatility could affect withdrawals. Family priorities can add another layer, particularly where clients are planning inheritances, supporting adult children or managing intergenerational wealth.

A financial plan therefore needs to evolve as circumstances change.

Why personalization matters in retirement planning

The firm’s positioning also reflects a broader shift in financial services toward advice that is more individualized.

Digital investing platforms have made portfolio access and basic financial information easier to obtain. But automation does not eliminate the need for advice when decisions involve multiple financial variables.

For example, deciding when to draw retirement income can affect taxation, investment longevity and government benefits. A change in employment, health, family circumstances or housing costs can also alter the assumptions behind a retirement plan.

This creates an important distinction between financial information and financial planning.

Information can explain what a financial product does. Planning connects that information to a person’s specific goals, resources and constraints.

MKS says its advisors seek to understand clients’ financial circumstances, retirement objectives and family priorities before developing strategies. The firm’s emphasis is consequently less about a single recommendation and more about maintaining a long-term advisory relationship.

Consumer recognition adds another signal

The Consumer Choice Award recognition gives the company an external measure of that client-service positioning.

According to the announcement, Consumer Choice Award uses independent market research to evaluate factors including reputation, customer satisfaction and overall excellence.

Awards based on customer experience can be particularly relevant in professional services because the quality of an advisory relationship is difficult to evaluate solely through conventional financial metrics.

Investment performance, meanwhile, can vary with markets and cannot necessarily be attributed to an advisor’s decisions over short periods. Communication, transparency, responsiveness and the ability to help clients understand complex decisions are therefore important parts of the overall service experience.

For consumers evaluating financial planners, the award should be viewed as one input among several. Credentials, regulatory registration, fee structures, investment approach, conflicts of interest and the scope of services remain important questions to ask before selecting an advisor.

Fifteen years points to the next phase

MKS Financial Services enters its 16th year with a business model centered on a relatively traditional proposition: personal advice backed by long-term relationships.

The environment around that proposition, however, is changing.

Consumers now have access to automated investment platforms, digital financial-planning tools and AI-powered financial information. Advisors increasingly compete not only with other professionals but with technology that can generate projections, summarize portfolios and answer basic financial questions instantly.

That makes the human component of financial planning potentially more important—not less—when clients face decisions requiring judgment and context.

For MKS, the next phase will likely involve maintaining that personal relationship while adapting to the technology increasingly used across wealth management.

The firm’s Consumer Choice Award provides recognition for the service model it has developed over 15 years. Its longer-term test will be whether that model continues to give clients a meaningful reason to seek human financial advice as digital tools become more capable.

For now, the company is using its 2026 award and 15-year milestone to reinforce a straightforward message: retirement planning is ultimately about more than numbers. It is about helping clients understand those numbers well enough to make decisions about the next stage of their lives.

Market Landscape

The financial-planning industry is being reshaped by a combination of demographic change, digital investment platforms and increasingly sophisticated financial technology.

Robo-advisors and digital wealth platforms have lowered the barrier to basic investment management, while AI tools are making financial information and analysis more accessible. Traditional advisory firms continue to compete by emphasizing personalized planning, behavioral guidance and the ability to coordinate complex financial decisions.

For retirement-focused practices, this creates both pressure and opportunity. Automated tools can handle standardized calculations efficiently, but retirement planning often requires decisions involving taxation, income sequencing, family circumstances and changing financial objectives.

The Consumer Choice Award recognition therefore arrives at a time when advisory firms are increasingly being judged on the complete client experience—not simply access to investment products.
