KuCoin Expands Beyond Trading as CoinGecko Report Highlights Payments, Tokenized Assets Growth

The cryptocurrency exchange landscape is entering a new phase where success depends on far more than trading volumes. As digital assets mature and regulatory scrutiny intensifies, exchanges are increasingly competing on infrastructure, compliance, payments, and real-world utility.

That shift is at the heart of a new CoinGecko Research report, which examines KuCoin’s evolution over the past nine years and its performance during the first half of 2026. Released alongside the exchange’s ninth anniversary, the report argues that KuCoin is transitioning from a crypto trading platform into a broader digital asset infrastructure provider serving more than 45 million users worldwide.

The findings also mirror broader industry trends as exchanges diversify revenue streams beyond traditional spot and derivatives trading.

Payments Become a Key Growth Engine

One of the report’s biggest takeaways is KuCoin’s rapid expansion into digital payments.

According to CoinGecko Research, the exchange recorded:

  • A 300% increase in off-chain payment volume during the first half of 2026.
  • Approximately 25-fold growth in payment orders.
  • A 60% expansion in its network of payment partners and merchants.
  • Strong growth in on-chain payment activity.

The figures suggest exchanges are increasingly positioning themselves as financial infrastructure providers rather than simply marketplaces for buying and selling cryptocurrencies.

As stablecoins and blockchain-based payments gain wider adoption, payment services are becoming an important competitive differentiator across the crypto industry.

Derivatives Trading Remains Resilient

Despite a more cautious digital asset market during the first half of the year, derivatives activity remained relatively strong on KuCoin.

The report found average daily trading volumes of:

  • $1.99 billion in spot markets.
  • $3.07 billion in perpetual futures.

Notably, weekend perpetual futures trading volumes were only 9.4% lower than weekday activity, highlighting the always-on nature of cryptocurrency markets and continued demand for around-the-clock trading infrastructure.

The data reinforces the importance of high-availability trading systems as institutional and retail investors increasingly expect uninterrupted market access.

Traders Diversify Beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum

The report also points to changing trading behavior among crypto investors.

By the end of June, the combined share of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) across KuCoin’s top 18 spot trading pairs had fallen from 74.3% to 45.2%, reflecting greater participation in altcoins and emerging digital asset sectors.

CoinGecko attributes the shift to faster capital rotation across new market narratives, increasing demand for exchanges capable of supporting both deep liquidity in established cryptocurrencies and rapid listings of emerging digital assets.

The trend highlights how exchange competitiveness increasingly depends on balancing liquidity for major cryptocurrencies with agility in supporting new blockchain ecosystems.

Tokenized Markets Continue to Expand

Another notable finding is the rapid growth of tokenized financial products.

Between January 1 and July 29, 2026, approximately 61% of newly launched perpetual futures contracts on KuCoin were tied to tokenized stocks or equity indices.

The growth reflects rising investor interest in gaining exposure to traditional financial markets through crypto-native products that operate continuously without conventional market hours.

Tokenized assets have become one of the fastest-growing areas of digital finance, with exchanges exploring blockchain-based versions of equities, commodities, and other real-world assets to attract a broader investor base.

Competition Shifts Toward Infrastructure

CoinGecko concludes that cryptocurrency exchanges are increasingly being judged on factors extending well beyond transaction execution.

Alongside liquidity, the report identifies infrastructure resilience, regulatory readiness, security, transparency, product innovation, and real-world utility as the characteristics likely to define long-term market leaders.

For KuCoin, the evolution from a token listing platform into a broader digital asset ecosystem reflects wider structural changes across the cryptocurrency industry as exchanges seek to become comprehensive financial infrastructure providers.

Why It Matters

The cryptocurrency industry is moving into a more mature stage where exchanges must deliver more than deep order books and competitive trading fees. Institutional adoption, regulatory expectations, and expanding real-world blockchain applications are driving demand for platforms that integrate payments, tokenized assets, advanced derivatives, and secure infrastructure under one ecosystem.

CoinGecko’s latest report suggests KuCoin is aligning with that broader industry transition by expanding beyond traditional exchange services. Whether through digital payments, tokenized markets, or diversified trading products, the future of crypto exchanges is increasingly centered on building long-term financial infrastructure rather than simply facilitating trades.
