KS Bank is expanding its retail banking presence in North Carolina with the opening of a new branch in Lillington, marking its second location in Harnett County. The expansion strengthens the community bank’s regional network while increasing access to digital banking, lending, mortgage, and wealth management services for local consumers and businesses as community banks continue investing in hybrid banking models that combine physical branches with digital financial services.

Community banks continue to invest in physical branch networks despite the rapid adoption of digital banking, highlighting the ongoing importance of relationship-based financial services for consumers and small businesses.

KS Bank, a North Carolina-based community bank, has announced the opening of its newest branch in Lillington, expanding its presence in Harnett County and reinforcing its strategy of combining local banking expertise with digital financial services.

The branch, located at 709 W. Front Street, is scheduled to begin serving customers on August 10, offering a full suite of personal and business banking services. Customers will have access to checking and savings accounts, commercial and consumer lending, mortgage products, wealth management services, drive-thru banking, an on-site ATM, and digital banking platforms.

The opening represents KS Bank’s second branch in Harnett County, following an earlier expansion into the region three years ago. The continued investment reflects confidence in the county’s economic growth and the sustained demand for locally focused financial institutions.

While digital banking has reshaped customer expectations, industry analysts note that physical branches continue to play an important role in relationship management, particularly for small businesses, commercial lending, mortgages, and financial planning. According to FDIC data, community banks remain significant providers of small business credit and rural banking services across the United States, despite accounting for a smaller share of total banking assets than larger national institutions.

The Lillington office will be led by Mark Eason, Senior Vice President and Commercial Relationship Manager, who brings local knowledge as a longtime Harnett County resident. The bank says its leadership strategy emphasizes community engagement alongside financial services, reflecting a relationship banking model that distinguishes many regional institutions from larger national banks.

Supporting branch operations is Travis B. Bailey, KS Bank’s Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, who also has ties to Harnett County. The leadership team expects the branch to serve both households and businesses as economic activity continues to expand across the region.

Community banking has increasingly evolved into a hybrid model, combining in-person advisory services with digital capabilities. Customers now expect mobile banking, online account management, digital payments, and remote banking access alongside personalized financial advice delivered through local branches.

Research from McKinsey & Company indicates that although digital banking adoption continues to rise, branches remain influential for high-value financial decisions, including mortgages, business financing, investment planning, and wealth management. Similarly, the American Bankers Association (ABA) has noted that consumers increasingly prefer flexible banking experiences that integrate digital convenience with access to in-person expertise when needed.

For community banks, this shift has accelerated investments in digital infrastructure without reducing the strategic importance of neighborhood branches. Instead, many institutions are redesigning branches to function as advisory and relationship centers rather than primarily transaction-processing locations.

KS Bank’s newest location reflects that broader trend by pairing traditional teller services with digital banking capabilities and specialized financial advisory offerings. The combination enables customers to complete routine transactions electronically while receiving personalized guidance for more complex financial needs.

Beyond financial products, community banks often play an active role in local economic development through lending to small businesses, supporting civic organizations, and participating in regional initiatives. These institutions continue to serve as important financing partners for entrepreneurs and local employers that may benefit from closer banking relationships and regional market expertise.

The Lillington expansion also illustrates how regional banks are pursuing measured geographic growth instead of large-scale national expansion. By concentrating investment within existing service areas, community institutions can deepen customer relationships while maintaining operational efficiency.

To mark the opening, KS Bank plans to host a ribbon-cutting celebration on August 13, featuring community activities and opportunities for residents and local businesses to meet the branch team.

As banking continues its digital transformation, the opening underscores that physical branches remain a strategic component of financial services delivery—particularly for community institutions seeking to balance technology investments with relationship-driven banking.

Market Landscape

Community banks are adapting to changing consumer expectations by investing in digital banking platforms, mobile financial services, and relationship-based branch networks. According to the FDIC, community banks continue to play a vital role in supporting small businesses and local economies, particularly in rural and regional markets. Meanwhile, McKinsey & Company reports that while digital banking usage continues to grow, customers still rely on branches for complex financial decisions such as mortgages, wealth management, and commercial lending.

The industry’s hybrid banking model—combining digital convenience with local advisory services—is becoming a defining strategy for regional financial institutions competing with larger national banks and digital-only challengers.
