GXS Group Named ASEAN’s Best Digital Bank for Consumers as Embedded Finance Strategy Gains Momentum

GXS Group has been named ASEAN’s Best Digital Bank for Consumers at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026, marking another milestone for the Grab-backed digital banking group as it expands embedded finance across Southeast Asia. The recognition highlights the company’s rapid rollout of digital banking platforms in Singapore and Malaysia, while underscoring the growing role of ecosystem-driven banking models in improving financial inclusion and customer engagement.

GXS Group has secured one of Southeast Asia’s highest digital banking honors after being named ASEAN’s Best Digital Bank for Consumers at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026, reinforcing the region’s accelerating shift toward embedded finance, AI-powered lending, and ecosystem-based banking.

The recognition comes just two years after the group launched GXS Bank in Singapore and GXBank in Malaysia, making it one of the few financial institutions to establish fully digital consumer banks across multiple ASEAN markets within such a short timeframe. Beyond these operations, GXS Group also holds a strategic minority stake in Superbank, extending its presence into Indonesia’s rapidly expanding digital banking landscape.

Euromoney cited the Group’s achievements in financial inclusion and customer experience as key factors behind the award. Separately, GXS Bank was recognized as Singapore’s Best Digital Bank, reflecting its continued investment in embedded financial services and digital-first customer experiences.

Embedded finance moves beyond standalone banking apps

Rather than relying solely on dedicated banking applications, GXS has centered its strategy on embedding financial services directly into digital platforms consumers already use.

Through partnerships with Grab and Singtel, customers can access banking services within the Grab application, enabling activities such as checking account balances, reviewing statements, and paying for rides or food deliveries without switching between multiple apps.

This integration illustrates a broader transformation across financial services, where embedded finance is replacing traditional banking journeys with contextual financial experiences delivered inside digital ecosystems.

For enterprises, embedded banking reduces customer friction while increasing engagement by placing financial services at the point where transactions naturally occur.

Industry analysts increasingly view embedded finance as one of fintech’s fastest-growing segments. According to McKinsey & Company, embedded financial services could generate hundreds of billions of dollars in global revenue over the coming decade as digital platforms integrate payments, lending, insurance, and banking into everyday digital experiences.

AI-driven lending expands financial inclusion

A distinguishing feature of GXS Group’s operating model is its use of proprietary artificial intelligence-driven credit assessment systems.

Unlike conventional lending models that primarily rely on traditional credit histories and fixed-income verification, GXS combines ecosystem behavioral data with existing credit evaluation methods to assess borrowers.

This enables the bank to extend financing to customers who have historically been underserved by conventional banking institutions, including platform workers, gig economy participants, entrepreneurs, and micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

The approach reflects a wider industry movement toward alternative data-driven underwriting, where transaction history, digital engagement, and platform activity supplement traditional credit scoring.

For example, the bank can proactively identify seasonal financing requirements among food and beverage merchants operating within its ecosystem, offering pre-qualified financing before businesses experience increased inventory or staffing demands.

Such predictive lending models are becoming increasingly common as financial institutions apply AI and machine learning to improve both customer experience and risk management.

Ecosystem banking becomes a competitive advantage

GXS reported that more than 80% of its retail and business banking customers originate from the Grab and Singtel ecosystem, highlighting how digital ecosystems are becoming powerful customer acquisition channels for financial institutions.

Rather than competing solely through physical branch expansion or conventional marketing, ecosystem banks leverage existing digital relationships to deliver financial products at moments when customers are already engaged.

This strategy is increasingly influencing banking innovation globally, with technology companies including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and payment platforms exploring embedded financial services through cloud infrastructure, AI capabilities, and partner ecosystems.

The model also aligns with broader open banking and Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) trends, where financial capabilities are integrated into third-party applications via APIs instead of standalone banking channels.

Recognition reflects broader digital banking momentum

The Euromoney awards add to a growing list of industry recognitions for GXS Group.

During the past month alone, the organization received eight industry awards, including honors at the Asian Banking & Finance Retail Banking Awards 2026, where GXS Bank won Digital Business Banking Initiative of the Year and Ecosystem Initiative of the Year.

Its Malaysian subsidiary GXBank was recognized as Virtual Bank of the Year while also receiving awards for AI & Machine Learning, Data Governance, and Internal Governance.

These accolades reflect increasing industry recognition of digital banks that combine cloud-native infrastructure, AI-powered services, and ecosystem partnerships to serve consumers and small businesses more efficiently than traditional banking models.

Industry outlook

Southeast Asia remains one of the world’s fastest-growing digital banking markets, supported by rising smartphone adoption, expanding digital commerce, and government initiatives promoting financial inclusion.

According to Statista, digital banking adoption across ASEAN continues to accelerate as consumers increasingly manage payments, savings, and lending through mobile-first platforms. Meanwhile, Gartner expects AI-powered decision-making and embedded finance capabilities to become defining competitive advantages for next-generation banking institutions.

For enterprise fintech leaders, GXS Group’s latest recognition illustrates how digital banks are evolving beyond mobile applications into integrated financial ecosystems powered by artificial intelligence, alternative data, and strategic platform partnerships.

As competition intensifies across Southeast Asia, embedded finance and ecosystem banking are likely to play an increasingly central role in shaping the region’s next phase of financial innovation.

Market Landscape

Digital banking across Southeast Asia is entering a new growth phase driven by embedded finance, AI-powered underwriting, open banking infrastructure, and mobile-first consumer behavior. Rather than competing through traditional branch networks, digital banks are building partnerships with super apps, telecommunications providers, and e-commerce platforms to acquire customers and deliver contextual financial services.

For consumers and MSMEs, this evolution promises faster lending decisions, more personalized financial products, and seamless banking experiences integrated into everyday digital interactions.
