Alipay+ Expands Cross-Border Mobile Payments Across Latin America

Global digital payments provider Alipay+ is expanding its mobile payment infrastructure into Latin America through a new partnership with fintech company PVS, signaling broader momentum around cross-border digital commerce, travel technology, and financial infrastructure modernization in emerging markets.

The initiative enables international travellers using more than 50 digital wallets and banking apps connected to the Alipay+ ecosystem to make QR-code payments across participating merchants in Chile and Argentina. The rollout is expected to expand into additional Latin American markets over time.

The announcement reflects how payment platforms are increasingly positioning themselves as part of the broader digital workforce and commerce infrastructure supporting international mobility, tourism, retail operations, and small business digitization. For enterprises operating across hospitality, retail, travel, and service industries, frictionless international payments are becoming a competitive requirement rather than a premium feature.

Alipay+, operated by Ant International, says its platform currently connects 150 million merchants and more than 2 billion consumer accounts globally. The company processes more than 20 million transactions daily across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas.

Under the agreement, Latin American fintech provider PVS will provide merchant connectivity and local payment infrastructure, while Alipay+ delivers access to international consumer wallets and banking applications. The integration also includes support for more than 10 national QR payment schemes.

The partnership highlights how QR-based payment systems continue gaining traction as a lower-cost alternative to traditional card infrastructure in developing markets. QR payments have become especially important in regions where smartphone adoption is outpacing formal banking penetration.

For global travellers, the system eliminates the need for currency exchange or international card onboarding. Users can pay through familiar domestic wallets while merchants receive settlement in local currency. That model has become increasingly attractive to tourism-heavy economies seeking to capture higher international spending without increasing payment friction.

The timing is notable. According to Statista, Latin America’s digital payments market is projected to continue double-digit annual growth as mobile wallet adoption accelerates across retail and travel sectors. Meanwhile, McKinsey estimates that digital payments are becoming a primary driver of financial inclusion and SME digitization across emerging economies.

The announcement also reflects a larger competitive shift happening across global fintech ecosystems. Payment firms are increasingly evolving beyond transaction processing into broader engagement platforms that combine payments, loyalty, embedded finance, identity verification, AI-driven marketing, and cross-border commerce tools.

That strategy mirrors moves from enterprise ecosystem players including Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP, which have increasingly embedded financial workflows, analytics, and AI capabilities into business operations platforms.

While Alipay+ primarily operates in consumer payments, its expansion into Latin America has implications for workforce mobility and international business operations. Multinational employers with globally distributed workforces increasingly rely on digital payment ecosystems for employee travel, contractor payments, reimbursement systems, and international commerce workflows.

The partnership also introduces AI-powered merchant engagement capabilities into the regional ecosystem. According to Ant International, merchants will gain access to digital marketing tools and cross-border customer engagement features aimed at attracting international consumers.

That approach aligns with broader trends in platform-based commerce. IDC has noted that AI-driven personalization and transaction intelligence are becoming core differentiators in payment ecosystems as providers compete for merchant retention and international transaction volume.

Another notable component is Alipay+’s expansion of NFC-enabled cross-border payments through Mastercard infrastructure. The company says users of wallets including AlipayHK, GCash, and Kakao Pay can now make NFC transactions at more than 150 million Mastercard-enabled merchants globally, including locations across Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico.

The broader Latin American fintech market has become increasingly competitive as international payment providers seek regional partnerships rather than building standalone infrastructure. Regulatory fragmentation, currency volatility, and varying banking standards across the region have historically made large-scale payment expansion difficult for foreign firms.

PVS brings regional payment expertise and local compliance capabilities that could help accelerate adoption. Industry analysts increasingly view local fintech partnerships as essential for global payment firms entering Latin American markets.

Ant International is also expanding embedded finance initiatives in the region. The company recently partnered with Mexican lending infrastructure provider R2 to support SME financing programs across Latin America. Embedded lending has emerged as a major growth category as fintech firms seek to integrate credit directly into commerce ecosystems.

The company’s regional visibility has also increased through sports sponsorships. In 2025, Ant International became the Asia-region sponsor of the Argentina National Football Team, a move that aligns with fintech firms’ growing use of global sports partnerships to expand consumer recognition in international markets.

For retailers and tourism operators across Latin America, the partnership could help attract higher spending from Asian travellers, particularly as post-pandemic tourism recovery continues. Asian outbound tourism is rebounding steadily, and digital payment familiarity has become a significant factor influencing traveller spending behavior.

The rollout also underscores a broader industry reality: payment infrastructure is increasingly becoming part of the digital experience economy. As global consumers expect app-native commerce experiences across borders, payment providers are competing not only on transaction speed but also on ecosystem integration, AI-driven engagement, and interoperability.

Market Landscape

Cross-border digital payments are becoming one of the fastest-growing segments in global fintech infrastructure. Providers including Mastercard, Visa, and regional fintech platforms are investing heavily in QR interoperability, embedded finance, and mobile wallet ecosystems.

Latin America has emerged as a strategic battleground due to rising smartphone adoption, growing digital banking penetration, and tourism recovery. Countries including Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Mexico are seeing rapid growth in QR-based commerce and real-time payment adoption.

The competitive landscape also overlaps with enterprise digitization trends. Platforms such as Workday and ADP increasingly integrate financial workflows and employee expense ecosystems into workforce management environments, creating convergence between fintech and enterprise operations technology.
