Clear Markets Adds N3XT Bank to 24/7 Collateral Network

Clear Markets and N3XT, a fully reserved, Wyoming-chartered US bank, have partnered to let institutional clients use US dollar deposits held at N3XT as collateral for round-the-clock derivatives trading and other financial activities. Through Clear Markets’ Collateralizer network, clients can manage collateral held with an independent bank custodian for transactions including swaps, options, forwards, third-party exchange funding and borrowing, addressing a growing infrastructure need as digital-asset markets operate beyond traditional banking hours.

Clear Markets and N3XT Bring Bank Deposits to 24/7 Collateral Trading

Financial markets are increasingly moving toward continuous trading, but the banking infrastructure supporting collateral and margin payments has not always operated on the same schedule. For institutions trading digital-asset derivatives overnight or during weekends, delays in moving dollars can complicate margin management and limit how efficiently capital is deployed.

Clear Markets and N3XT are targeting that gap by connecting regulated bank-held US dollar deposits to a collateral-management platform designed for round-the-clock financial markets. Under the partnership, N3XT has joined Clear Markets’ Collateralizer network as a custodian for US dollar deposits, while Clear Markets is opening an account with the bank.

The companies say the arrangement will allow institutional clients to pledge eligible dollar deposits held at N3XT as collateral for transactions managed through the network, including derivatives trading, funding for third-party exchanges and borrowing.

How the collateral infrastructure works

The partnership combines three distinct functions: bank custody, collateral management and derivatives execution.

N3XT, a fully reserved, Wyoming-chartered US bank, provides dollar custody and account-control arrangements. Clear Markets operates Collateralizer, its proprietary collateral-management service, which connects independent bank custodians to support margin and collateral workflows.

The third component is Clear Markets Swap Execution Facility (CMSEF), a Commodity Futures Trading Commission-regulated swap execution facility for institutional digital-asset and cryptocurrency derivatives trading. According to the announcement, CMSEF supports round-the-clock trading through a single global order book.

Under the arrangement, eligible cash held at N3XT can be pledged as collateral through agreed custody and control agreements. Clear Markets supplies the technology to manage collateral without taking custody of client funds.

This separation matters for institutions evaluating digital-asset infrastructure. A trading venue executes transactions, a bank safeguards deposits under its applicable arrangements, and a collateral-management platform coordinates how assets support financial obligations. Combining these functions in a connected workflow does not eliminate their distinct legal, operational or regulatory responsibilities.

Clear Markets describes the partnership as an industry first, although the announcement does not identify an independent market-wide assessment establishing that distinction.

Why 24/7 collateral movement matters

In derivatives markets, collateral helps protect counterparties against potential losses as positions change in value. Institutions may need to post initial margin when opening positions and variation margin as market movements change their exposure.

When markets operate continuously, those requirements can arise outside conventional banking hours. If the systems responsible for transferring collateral operate on a different schedule, institutions may need to maintain larger operational buffers or manage liquidity across separate processes.

The Clear Markets–N3XT arrangement aims to connect collateral management with payment infrastructure that operates around the clock. N3XT says its programmable payments can move between N3XT accounts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, supporting margin movements during overnight and weekend trading.

The companies also say clients can use eligible deposits held at N3XT for funding third-party exchanges and securing borrowing, subject to the network’s supported arrangements.

For institutional trading desks, the potential benefit is greater flexibility in allocating dollar collateral as market conditions change. However, actual funding speed and availability will depend on the relevant account arrangements, transaction requirements, operational controls and counterparties involved.

The announcement does not establish that every transfer to an external bank or exchange settles instantly. The stated 24/7 payment capability specifically concerns transfers between N3XT accounts.

A bridge between banking and digital-asset markets

The partnership reflects a wider challenge for financial institutions: connecting conventional banking assets with markets that increasingly operate on digital infrastructure.

Tokenized assets, cryptocurrency derivatives and other blockchain-based financial products can support transactions outside traditional market hours. Yet institutions still need dependable arrangements for custody, collateral eligibility, margin calls and access to fiat currency.

Clear Markets is positioning Collateralizer as an intermediary technology layer between independent bank custodians and institutional trading workflows. Rather than requiring the collateral-management provider to take custody of client funds, the model allows cash to remain with the participating bank under agreed controls.

N3XT’s role is to provide the dollar accounts and programmable payment capabilities needed to support those workflows. Its participation expands the custodian options available through Collateralizer and connects bank-held dollars to Clear Markets’ derivatives infrastructure.

The approach may also be relevant to real-world asset markets, where institutions need reliable collateral arrangements to support transactions involving tokenized financial instruments. The companies say the network can support collateral for institutional digital-asset and real-world asset trading, although specific additional asset classes and deployments were not detailed in the announcement.

Risk controls remain central

Round-the-clock collateral management does not remove the risks associated with derivatives or digital assets. Institutions must still evaluate counterparty exposure, collateral eligibility, valuation methods, custody arrangements and the legal enforceability of account-control agreements.

The distinction between managing collateral and holding it is particularly important. Clear Markets says it provides collateral-management technology without taking custody of client funds, while N3XT provides custody and account-control arrangements. Institutions will need to understand how those responsibilities are allocated and how collateral is handled during disputes, defaults or operational disruptions.

The CFTC-regulated status of CMSEF is also relevant to the trading environment, but it should not be interpreted as blanket regulatory approval of every product, custody arrangement or transaction supported through the broader network.

Clear Markets President Shawn Dorsch said the partnership is intended to make it easier for institutions to trade derivatives while keeping collateral with an independent bank custodian. N3XT CEO and President Jeffrey Wallis described the integration as a way to connect continuously available dollar infrastructure with markets that increasingly operate around the clock.

The commercial test will be whether institutions adopt the service for meaningful trading and collateral flows. The announcement does not disclose expected transaction volumes, customer commitments or measurable capital-efficiency improvements.

For the broader fintech industry, the partnership highlights a practical development in institutional financial infrastructure: connecting regulated bank deposits, collateral-management technology and derivatives markets without requiring a single provider to perform every function. As trading hours expand, the ability to manage collateral alongside those markets could become an increasingly important requirement for institutional digital finance.

Market Landscape

The partnership sits at the intersection of banking technology, derivatives infrastructure and digital-asset collateral management. As institutions expand into continuous trading, they need payment systems and custody arrangements that can support margin obligations outside conventional business hours.

Three trends are shaping this market:

  • Always-on financial infrastructure: Digital-asset markets are increasing demand for payment and collateral workflows that operate beyond traditional banking schedules.
  • Separation of custody and technology: Institutions may prefer to keep funds with independent custodians while using specialized platforms for collateral allocation and transaction management.
  • Institutional digital-asset risk management: Collateral eligibility, margin calculations, account controls and settlement reliability remain essential as regulated financial firms participate in digital markets.

Clear Markets’ Collateralizer network aims to connect bank-held cash with derivatives and other financing workflows. N3XT adds round-the-clock internal dollar transfers, while CMSEF provides a regulated venue for eligible swap execution.

The opportunity depends on operational reliability, legal arrangements, integration with participating institutions and adoption by trading firms. The model may improve collateral mobility within supported workflows, but it does not eliminate counterparty risk or guarantee instant transfers across external banking networks.
