Beforepay Slips Into Fortune Cookies for Lunar New Year Marketing Bet in Melbourne

In a fintech world obsessed with clicks, conversions, and app installs, Beforepay is trying something decidedly analog: fortune cookies.

This Lunar New Year, diners across Melbourne are cracking open cookies that contain not just a traditional fortune—but a short, supportive message from Beforepay.

It marks the first time an Australian lender has used fortune cookies at scale as a brand channel, according to the company. The activation is being rolled out across participating restaurants citywide and will run as a multi-month trial.

In an era of relentless digital ad fatigue, Beforepay is betting that a quiet moment at the end of a shared meal may be more powerful than another social feed impression.

Finance Meets the Fortune Slip

Each cookie contains a light, encouraging message on the front. On the reverse, diners will find a short Beforepay note and—if they’re curious—an optional QR code.

Scan it, and users land on a dedicated page featuring product details, eligibility criteria, and required disclosures before any next step. The emphasis, the company says, is on transparency and informed engagement rather than impulse clicks.

CEO Jamie Twiss framed the campaign as a brand play rather than a direct-response push.

“This campaign is about being present in a shared moment, with messaging that feels calm and human,” he said. “Life doesn’t always go to plan, and we’re here to support people through the occasional bump in the road.”

For a lender operating in a tightly scrutinized consumer finance environment, tone matters.

Why Offline, and Why Now?

The move comes as fintech customer acquisition costs remain elevated across digital channels. Social media ads are more expensive, attention spans are shorter, and trust in financial advertising is fragile.

Fortune cookies, by contrast, offer:

  • A built-in moment of attention
  • A social setting where messages are read aloud
  • A physical artifact that some diners keep

Beforepay cites research suggesting around one in five people hold onto their fortune slips after a meal. That creates a lingering brand touchpoint—something digital ads rarely achieve.

Jon Whitby, Head of Marketing at Beforepay, described the idea as intentionally simple.

“Fortune cookies are one of the few moments people still slow down for, read out loud, and share,” he said. “We liked the idea of meeting people there, not interrupting them.”

In financial services, where trust and perception often outweigh product differentiation, that subtlety could be strategic.

A Multi-Month Test, Not a Gimmick

The campaign launches alongside Lunar New Year celebrations but is structured as a broader test. Cookies will continue circulating in Melbourne venues for several months, with engagement and brand impact tracked.

If performance metrics support it, Beforepay plans to expand the initiative nationally.

The campaign is delivered in partnership with OpenFortune, which distributes branded fortune cookies through restaurant networks. OpenFortune has worked with consumer brands globally, but its use by an Australian financial services company signals growing experimentation within the sector.

The Bigger Branding Play

Beforepay markets itself as an ethical lender, offering small, fixed-fee advances rather than traditional interest-based short-term loans. That positioning requires careful brand calibration—particularly in Australia’s regulated lending environment.

By opting for a low-pressure, opt-in QR experience, the company avoids the perception of aggressive marketing. Required disclosures and eligibility details appear before any application flow, reinforcing compliance alignment.

The broader implication: fintech marketing may be entering a more experiential phase.

As consumers grow wary of digital financial advertising, companies are exploring ways to embed their messaging into everyday moments—coffee cups, retail receipts, and now, dessert rituals.

For Beforepay, the bet is that trust can start not with a banner ad, but with a shared laugh at the end of dinner.

Whether that translates into measurable customer growth remains to be seen. But in a category where attention is scarce and skepticism is high, showing up quietly might be the boldest move of all.
