Elavon Wins TSG Award for B2B Payment API

Elavon, the payments subsidiary of U.S. Bank, has received the 2026 Best B2B API Award from The Strawhecker Group (TSG), highlighting the growing importance of API design in enterprise payment infrastructure. TSG also recognized Elavon’s payment gateway for developer experience and its Converge platform for its developer stack.

Business-to-business payments have more complicated requirements than a typical checkout transaction. Companies need to handle multiple payment methods, richer transaction data, approval workflows, reconciliation and cost controls, while developers increasingly expect payment APIs to integrate cleanly with existing enterprise software.

That combination is behind Elavon’s latest recognition from The Strawhecker Group (TSG). The payments processor, a wholly owned subsidiary of U.S. Bank, has received the 2026 Best B2B API Award in TSG’s annual API Best of Breed Awards.

TSG evaluates payment gateway APIs across areas including performance, developer experience, documentation, onboarding, integration complexity and innovation. For the Best B2B API category, its assessment focuses specifically on how payment gateways address the operational requirements of commercial payments.

Elavon’s payment gateway was recognized for capabilities including workflow automation, detailed transaction-data exchange and interchange optimization. Those features address a central challenge in B2B payment infrastructure: commercial transactions often involve considerably more data and process complexity than consumer payments.

A business payment may need to connect an invoice to a specific customer account, pass transaction information into an enterprise resource planning system, trigger internal approval rules and ultimately reconcile the payment against an accounting record. APIs therefore become more than a technical connection between two systems; they can determine how much payment functionality can be embedded directly into business workflows.

That is particularly important as companies increasingly adopt embedded payments. Rather than directing customers or employees to a separate payment portal, software platforms can integrate payment initiation, transaction status and reconciliation into applications used for accounting, procurement, invoicing or commerce.

Elavon says its payment gateway is designed to let businesses, software providers and partners accept payments and automate workflows while integrating with existing systems. The company positions that approach as a way to reduce implementation friction and accelerate the introduction of payment-enabled products.

TSG’s methodology adds another dimension to the recognition. Its Global Experience Monitoring (GEM) platform assesses publicly available API documentation and integration experiences for both novice and experienced developers. That makes documentation and onboarding part of the technology evaluation rather than treating API performance in isolation.

The emphasis reflects a broader shift in enterprise software purchasing. Payment APIs are increasingly selected not only on transaction-processing capabilities but also on how quickly developers can understand, test and deploy them.

Elavon received two additional honors in TSG’s 2026 awards. Elavon Payment Gateway was named a runner-up for Best Developer Experience, while Converge was a runner-up for Best Dev Stack. TSG says the awards were based on independent evaluations of publicly available API documentation and gateway results across each category.

For developers, the implications are practical. A payment API needs to expose enough functionality to support complex business requirements without forcing developers to construct large amounts of payment logic themselves. Documentation, authentication flows, testing environments, error handling and consistent data models can all affect implementation time.

The B2B market makes those considerations particularly important because payment infrastructure often has to work across multiple systems and organizational boundaries. A software provider might need to integrate payments into an accounting platform, while an enterprise merchant could require the same infrastructure to support multiple payment methods, currencies, reporting requirements and internal controls.

Interchange optimization is another differentiator highlighted by TSG. For commercial payments, payment acceptance costs can vary according to transaction characteristics and payment method. Providing data and controls that help organizations manage interchange can therefore become part of the payment technology proposition rather than an issue handled only after a transaction has occurred.

This is also where payment orchestration is becoming increasingly relevant. Businesses are looking for infrastructure that can coordinate multiple payment methods and processing relationships while presenting a unified interface to their applications.

The trend extends beyond traditional payment processors. Fintech infrastructure companies, enterprise software vendors and banking technology providers are increasingly exposing payments through APIs, enabling developers to build financial functionality directly into vertical applications. Companies such as Stripe, Adyen, PayPal and Fiserv have helped make API-based payments a standard component of modern commerce infrastructure, while incumbent processors are expanding their developer tooling to compete for the same embedded-finance workloads.

For Elavon, the TSG recognition comes as the company continues to position its gateway and broader commerce technology as infrastructure for merchants, software providers and enterprise organizations. Its relationship with U.S. Bank also places the platform within a larger banking ecosystem, where payment processing increasingly intersects with commercial banking, treasury management and digital financial services.

The competitive question is therefore no longer simply whether a processor can move money. As more payment functionality becomes embedded inside business software, API usability, data richness, workflow support and implementation speed can influence which infrastructure providers developers choose.

TSG’s recognition of Elavon illustrates that evolution. The Best B2B API award is less about a new payment method than about the technology layer underneath commercial payments—and the ability of that layer to make complex transactions easier to build, operate and manage.

Market Landscape

The B2B payments market is shifting toward API-first payment infrastructure, embedded finance and payment orchestration. Enterprises increasingly expect payment providers to connect directly with ERP, accounting, commerce and vertical SaaS platforms rather than operate as standalone transaction processors.

The competitive landscape includes traditional processors such as Elavon, Fiserv and Global Payments alongside API-first fintech companies including Stripe and Adyen. The differentiators increasingly include developer tooling, API coverage, data access, fraud controls, payment-method breadth and the ability to support complex enterprise workflows.

The developer experience is particularly important for software companies embedding payments. Poor documentation or complicated integration processes can delay product launches even when the underlying payment infrastructure is capable.

Elavon’s three TSG recognitions—Best B2B API, runner-up for Best Developer Experience and runner-up for Best Dev Stack—therefore point toward a wider industry priority: making payment infrastructure easier to consume programmatically while retaining the controls required for commercial transactions.
