Klarna Backs Google’s Agent Payments Protocol to Power Next-Gen Commerce

Klarna, the global digital bank known for flexible payments, is stepping into the future of “agent-led commerce” by supporting Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). The move strengthens Klarna’s long-standing collaboration with Google, which already spans Google Pay, Chrome autofill, Google Store, Google Play, and Google Cloud.

“Agent-led commerce represents an exciting new frontier, one that demands transparency, trust, and smarter payment experiences,” said David Sykes, Klarna’s Chief Commercial Officer. “We’re doubling down on our relationship with Google to support AP2 and help define an open, responsible payments architecture for the future of shopping.”

What AP2 Means for Consumers and Agents

The Agent Payments Protocol is designed as an open standard to enable secure, agent-facilitated payments across digital platforms. By leveraging AP2, Klarna can extend its real-time underwriting, flexible payment options, and transparent terms to scenarios where a consumer’s agent—human or AI—executes transactions on their behalf. The result: a consistent, intelligent, and trustworthy payment experience, no matter how delegated the transaction.

“For years, we’ve worked with Klarna to deliver secure, seamless, and innovative payment experiences,” said Stavan Parikh, VP/GM, Payments at Google. “Their contributions to AP2 exemplify the cross-industry collaboration needed to build open, scalable frameworks for the future of commerce.”

Klarna’s Evolution: From Payments Provider to Commerce Infrastructure

Klarna’s involvement with AP2 highlights its shift from being a flexible payments provider to becoming a core infrastructure player for next-generation commerce. By helping define the standards for agent-led payments, Klarna is positioning itself at the center of a growing market where consumers rely on AI or human agents to manage transactions while still expecting speed, security, and clarity.

The collaboration also signals a broader industry trend: payments are no longer just transactional—they’re becoming intelligent, context-aware, and agent-enabled, requiring close coordination between banks, tech giants, and platform developers. Klarna and Google’s partnership on AP2 could set a benchmark for future-proof, open payment frameworks that other players may adopt.
