YouHodler Italy S.r.l. has received authorisation from Italy’s financial markets regulator, CONSOB, to operate as a crypto-asset service provider under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). The authorisation, issued on 8 October 2026 after consultation with the Bank of Italy, covers five services, including crypto-asset custody, exchanges, order execution and transfers. The company can now serve Italian clients within the MiCA regulatory framework and says it plans to expand into other EU member states through the regulation’s cross-border procedure.

YouHodler Italy Secures MiCA Authorisation From CONSOB

YouHodler Italy S.r.l. has secured authorisation from Italy’s Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB) to provide crypto-asset services under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, marking a regulatory milestone for the company’s Italian operations.

The decision was adopted through CONSOB resolution no. 24156 on 8 October 2026, following consultation with the Bank of Italy, according to the company’s announcement. The authorisation falls under MiCA, Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, and Italy’s Legislative Decree 129/2024.

The approval covers five services: custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients; exchange of crypto-assets for funds; exchange of crypto-assets for other crypto-assets; execution of client orders; and transfer services for crypto-assets on behalf of clients.

The authorisation enables YouHodler Italy to serve customers in Italy as a supervised crypto-asset service provider. The company says it intends to extend its services to all 27 EU member states through the cross-border procedure established under MiCA. That expansion is a stated plan, not confirmation that the company is already authorised to operate in every member state.

What the Authorisation Covers

MiCA establishes a common regulatory framework for crypto-asset markets across the EU, including rules for firms providing specified crypto-asset services. For authorised providers, requirements include organisational and governance standards, client-asset safeguards, disclosure obligations and procedures for handling complaints.

YouHodler Italy says its authorisation brings its Italian services within these protections, including segregation of client crypto-assets and requirements relating to security and pre-contractual information.

Such safeguards are relevant to customers choosing where to hold and transact in digital assets. However, regulatory authorisation should not be interpreted as a guarantee against investment losses, cyber incidents or the failure of a crypto-asset or service. The protections applicable to a customer depend on the service, the assets involved and the relevant legal requirements.

MiCA also distinguishes between authorisation to provide crypto-asset services and the rules governing particular crypto-assets or other financial products. Customers and institutional partners therefore still need to assess the scope of a provider’s permissions and the characteristics of the services being offered.

Italy’s Crypto Market Adjusts to MiCA

The authorisation comes as Italy’s crypto industry adapts to the EU-wide framework. YouHodler Italy executive Lorenzo Barbantini Scanni said that, at the end of the transitional period in June, nine firms had been authorised to provide crypto-asset services, compared with approximately 140 operators previously listed in the OAM register.

Scanni also cited an estimate of around 1.7 million Italians holding crypto-assets. These figures were provided in the company’s announcement and should be assessed against the relevant regulator and registry data, including the exact dates and definitions used.

The comparison reflects a shift in the regulatory status required to provide crypto-asset services. Registration in an earlier national framework is not necessarily equivalent to authorisation under MiCA, and the number of firms in a registry should not by itself be taken as a measure of market quality or customer protection.

For crypto businesses, the new framework increases the importance of formal authorisation, compliance processes and operational governance. For banks and other financial institutions considering digital-asset services, working with an authorised provider may offer a clearer regulatory basis for evaluating potential partnerships.

Cross-Border Expansion Is the Next Step

YouHodler says it plans to extend its Italian operation into the rest of the EU using MiCA’s cross-border notification process. The framework can allow an authorised crypto-asset service provider to offer permitted services in other member states after completing the required procedure, subject to the regulation’s conditions.

The distinction between authorisation in Italy and subsequent cross-border service provision is important. The CONSOB decision establishes the company’s permission within its approved scope, while expansion into additional markets depends on completing the applicable regulatory steps.

The company was founded in Switzerland and has since expanded its brand across Europe, according to co-founder Ilya Volkov. The Italian authorisation adds a supervised operating entity under the EU framework, but it does not automatically establish that every service is available throughout the Union.

For YouHodler, the immediate commercial opportunity is to serve Italian customers under MiCA and pursue broader access to European markets. The longer-term test will be whether it can scale its services while maintaining the governance, custody safeguards and operational controls required by the regulatory framework.

As the EU’s crypto market develops under MiCA, authorisations such as this one provide a more formal basis for evaluating service providers. Customers should still examine each provider’s permissions, terms, risks and complaint procedures before using crypto-asset services.

Market Landscape

The EU crypto-asset market is moving from national transitional arrangements toward a harmonised authorisation framework under MiCA. In Italy, the transition period ended on 30 June 2026, and the Bank of Italy’s regulatory information page reports that nine entities were authorised at that point.

YouHodler Italy’s authorisation reflects three important developments:

  • Regulatory consolidation: Crypto-asset providers must hold the relevant authorisation or qualify under another route permitted by MiCA to provide covered services in the EU.
  • Defined service permissions: Authorisation specifies the crypto-asset services a provider may offer; firms cannot assume that approval for one service automatically covers every crypto-related activity.
  • Cross-border expansion: Article 65 establishes a notification process for authorised providers intending to offer services in additional member states. It is a regulatory process, not an automatic extension of every service without further steps.

For YouHodler, the immediate milestone is authorisation in Italy, followed by its planned expansion across the EU. Competition will depend not only on regulatory status but also on service reliability, custody arrangements, pricing, security and customer trust.
