American Growth Insurance Makes First Acquisition, Adds Heller-Kowitz to AI-Native Brokerage Network

The insurance brokerage industry is getting another AI-focused challenger. American Growth Insurance (AGI) has completed its first acquisition, bringing Heller-Kowitz Insurance Advisors into its growing AI-native brokerage network as it begins a nationwide expansion strategy.

Financial terms of the private transaction were not disclosed.

Backed by Rockbridge Growth Equity and Atomic, AGI is pursuing a model that combines acquisitions of established independent insurance agencies with a proprietary technology platform designed to automate operations, improve client service, and help agencies scale without sacrificing the relationship-driven approach that remains central to insurance brokerage.

The acquisition marks AGI’s official entry into the M&A market, with the company identifying the Mid-Atlantic region as the starting point for a broader U.S. expansion.

AGI Bets on AI-First Insurance Operations

Unlike many insurance consolidators that focus primarily on increasing market share, AGI is positioning itself as an AI-native brokerage network built from the ground up around technology.

Rather than offering standalone AI tools, the company aims to integrate artificial intelligence into the core operations of acquired agencies—from workflow automation and operational analytics to client servicing and business intelligence.

Heller-Kowitz will now operate on AGI’s proprietary technology platform, giving the Baltimore-based agency access to automation capabilities and digital tools designed to reduce administrative workloads while enabling advisors to spend more time serving clients.

The strategy reflects a broader shift across the insurance industry, where agencies are increasingly embedding AI into day-to-day operations instead of deploying isolated productivity applications.

Why Heller-Kowitz Matters

Founded in 2014 by insurance veterans Steve Heller and Brian Kowitz, Heller-Kowitz has built a diversified insurance practice spanning personal lines, commercial insurance, employee benefits, and life insurance.

The agency is also recognized as a Reagan Consulting Best Practices Agency, a designation awarded to high-performing independent insurance firms that demonstrate strong operational and financial performance.

For AGI, acquiring an established, operator-led agency provides more than additional premium volume. It strengthens the company’s strategy of partnering with experienced brokerage leaders while modernizing their operations through shared technology infrastructure.

According to AGI, agency leadership will remain in place, preserving the client relationships and local expertise that independent brokerages rely on for long-term growth.

Building an AI-Powered Brokerage Platform

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a competitive differentiator across the insurance value chain.

From underwriting and claims processing to customer engagement and agency management, insurers and brokerages are investing heavily in AI to improve efficiency while reducing operational costs.

AGI believes the greatest opportunity lies inside brokerage operations themselves. By integrating automation directly into agency workflows, the company aims to simplify repetitive administrative tasks, deliver actionable business insights, and improve overall service delivery.

The approach also gives acquired agencies access to a broader carrier network and scalable operational infrastructure without requiring them to build enterprise-grade technology independently.

Why It Matters

The independent insurance brokerage market has become increasingly competitive as private equity firms, national brokerages, and technology startups compete for acquisitions.

Many consolidators promise greater scale and expanded market access, but AGI is attempting to differentiate itself by positioning AI as the foundation of its operating model rather than an add-on capability.

That distinction could prove significant as brokerages seek ways to improve productivity without losing the personalized service that clients expect.

For Heller-Kowitz, the partnership provides access to advanced automation and technology while allowing the agency to retain its leadership and client-first culture. For AGI, it represents the first building block in what could become a nationwide network of AI-enabled insurance brokerages.

As generative AI and workflow automation continue reshaping financial services, firms that successfully combine experienced operators with deeply integrated technology may gain a meaningful advantage in an increasingly digital insurance landscape.
