American Express Expands Business Banking With AI Payroll

  • September 16, 2026

American Express is expanding its business banking offering with a new high-yield savings account, integrated rewards-to-deposit functionality and an upcoming payroll service powered by Gusto. The moves bring checking, savings, card rewards and payroll closer together within the American Express Business Banking experience, reflecting the broader shift toward integrated financial platforms for small and midsize businesses.

American Express is expanding beyond business cards and payments with a broader financial-services platform designed to bring everyday banking, cash management, rewards and payroll into a more connected experience.

The company has launched American Express Business Savings, a high-yield business savings account that will sit alongside American Express Business Checking under the new American Express Business Banking umbrella. The company is also preparing two additional capabilities: the ability for Graphite Business Cash Unlimited Card Members to deposit Reward Dollars directly into Business Checking and a payroll solution powered by Gusto that will eventually add AI-powered payroll insights.

The strategy represents a shift from individual financial products toward a more integrated business-finance ecosystem. Customers can apply for Business Checking, Business Savings or both through a single application and manage those accounts alongside American Express card products through the company’s online banking experience and Amex app.

For businesses, the attraction is less about adding another banking product and more about reducing the number of disconnected systems used to manage cash, expenses and employee payments.

American Express Business Savings, available from September 15, offers a 2.95% annual percentage yield, according to the company, with no minimum balance requirement or monthly maintenance fee. The account supports ACH and wire transfers, check deposits and accounting-software integrations, while customers with both Business Checking and Business Savings can move money instantly between the two accounts without a transfer fee.

The product targets a common treasury-management problem among smaller businesses: cash can remain in operating accounts even when it could be generating a return elsewhere. An American Express Trendex survey of 1,165 small-business financial decision-makers found that 82% agreed their excess business cash could be put to better use in a savings account.

The survey also points to demand for greater connectivity between financial tools. Ninety-three percent of respondents said they want their banking and financial tools to work together seamlessly. While the figures are based on an American Express-sponsored survey rather than an independent industry study, they illustrate the customer behavior the company is targeting with Business Banking.

That connected approach extends to card rewards. Later this year, eligible Graphite Business Cash Unlimited Card members will be able to redeem Reward Dollars as deposits directly into their American Express Business Checking accounts at a 1:1 redemption rate.

The change turns card rewards into another funding mechanism for a business’s banking account. Rather than limiting rewards to statement credits or other redemption options, American Express is connecting the card’s spending activity with the customer’s cash-management infrastructure.

The third piece of the strategy is payroll. American Express says it will introduce a new payroll solution inside Business Checking, powered by Gusto, allowing customers to enroll, manage and run payroll without leaving their banking environment.

Payroll is an important extension of embedded finance because it connects financial accounts with one of the most recurring and operationally important obligations for a business. Integrating payroll with banking can reduce the need to move money between separate systems and potentially give businesses more immediate visibility into upcoming cash requirements.

American Express says 81% of respondents in its Trendex survey want better visibility into upcoming payroll payments, while 65% identify payroll streamlining as a priority during the next 12 months.

The company plans to add an AI-powered component to the payroll solution, providing access to payroll insights. The payroll and AI capabilities are expected to roll out to Business Checking customers early next year.

The move puts American Express into a competitive field where banks, fintech companies and software providers are increasingly converging around small-business financial management. Traditional banking providers are adding accounting integrations and automated cash-management capabilities, while fintech platforms are expanding from payments into banking, lending, payroll and business administration.

The competitive boundary is consequently shifting from individual products toward financial operating platforms. A business that can manage payments, banking, expenses, payroll and accounting from connected workflows may have less incentive to maintain multiple financial-service relationships.

American Express is attempting to build that connectivity around its existing business-card franchise. Its approach differs from a pure-play banking strategy because cards, rewards and membership remain central components of the ecosystem.

The upcoming Gusto integration also illustrates how partnerships can accelerate embedded-finance expansion. Rather than developing a payroll platform entirely in-house, American Express is integrating an established payroll provider into its banking environment and adding its own financial-data and AI layer.

AI could eventually make the payroll component more than a payment-processing feature. If payroll data can be translated into forward-looking insights, businesses could potentially use the system to understand upcoming labor costs, identify cash-flow requirements and manage recurring obligations with less manual analysis. The effectiveness of those capabilities will depend on the quality of the underlying data, the relevance of the insights and how transparently the AI communicates its recommendations.

The broader trend is toward embedded finance infrastructure in which financial services become embedded within software and workflows that businesses already use. Banking APIs, accounting integrations, payroll platforms and automated payments are gradually converging into a more unified operating environment.

For American Express, Business Banking gives the company another way to deepen its relationship with business customers beyond card spending. Savings creates a deposit relationship, rewards create an additional connection between cards and accounts, while payroll could increase the frequency with which businesses use the platform.

The strategy also places greater emphasis on the business’s full financial lifecycle. Cash enters through payments or other revenue, moves between checking and savings, funds expenses and payroll, and generates card rewards. Connecting those stages creates more opportunities for automation and personalized financial tools.

The immediate announcement is therefore broader than a new savings account. American Express is building a connected business-finance platform in which banking, payments, rewards, payroll and AI-supported financial insights operate within a single membership ecosystem.

Whether that strategy changes how businesses choose financial providers will depend on adoption and the quality of the integrations. But the direction is clear: business banking is increasingly competing on how well financial products work together, rather than simply on the features of individual accounts.

Market Landscape

The business-finance market is increasingly moving toward embedded banking, integrated payments, automated cash management and software-connected financial services.

American Express is combining several of those trends through Business Banking, linking checking and savings with its card ecosystem while adding payroll through Gusto. The company’s own survey indicates strong demand for connected financial tools, with 93% of respondents saying they want banking and financial products to work together seamlessly.

For fintech providers and incumbent banks, the competitive focus is increasingly shifting toward customer experience across the financial lifecycle. APIs, accounting integrations, automated transfers, payroll connectivity and AI-driven insights are becoming components of broader business-finance platforms.

American Express’ strategy also demonstrates how established financial brands can use partnerships to expand into adjacent workflows without building every capability internally.
